Motels of the Mother Road: A Creative Survey

Project Description
The Temporary Autonomous Museum(s) is sponsoring a project called “Motels of the Mother Road: A Creative Survey” (2009-2012) under the directorship of artist Eila Kovanen.
This project has received special funding and support from the University of New Mexico.
The vision for “Motels of the Mother Road: A Creative Survey” pushes the boundaries of how a broad cross-section of individuals might experience community and stewardship of an endangered history through creative expressions. We will be creating alternative kinds of gatherings, artistic endeavors, and collaborations. The project combines historic and lived culture concerning Route 66, its motels, and its interconnected cities, with Albuquerque as the hub and Los Angeles and Chicago as end points -- connecting artists and the art community, business owners, historians and historic preservation organizations, collectors, and all lovers of Route 66.
Project Outcome
“Motels of the Mother Road: A Creative Survey” will culminate in local community gatherings (several at the motels themselves), a book, an online web hub and archive of creative projects, and two exhibitions at two different venues, one in Albuquerque and one Chicago or Los Angeles. We invite people and communities of all kinds to participate! Please see the calls for submissions below.
