Mission
Founded in 2006, the Temporary Autonomous Museum(s) supports and presents projects and efforts that fall into a range of categories, usually involving activity that exists outside the systems of formal control that surround us.
The temporary component to autonomy stems from the fact that in 21st century late capitalism, anything creative, exceptional, or authentic that exists for longer than two seconds is immediately absorbed by the Machine—and within four seconds you’ll see it reproduced in a SUV commercial.
"Autonomy" refers to a person's capacity for self-determination in the context of moral choices, freedom from external authority, and informed consent. We hope that autonomy-supportive social contexts, however short-lived, will facilitate self-determined motivation, positive development, and generalized (if momentary) well-being.
We realize that a web site museum-ifying anything temporarily autonomous is a bit of an oxymoron, but we take this up as a strategy, hoping to lend some flexiblility to the notion ‘museum.’ Therefore the Temporary Autonomous Museum(s) and the digital discourse that surround it here are curious, re-purposed kinds of spaces.

Inaugural Project: Artists Go Lightly
This exhibition and community event took place in the Noe Valley/Castro flat of two artists who, facing significant housing rights issues, left San Francisco. The event occured during the open-ended, limbo period after the home had been emptied, but before the keys were turned in to the landlord. More >>
